A River's Journey

Teaching Ideas/ Suggested Activities: I would put a blank picture up onto the wall and first ask the children if they can identify any of the parts before giving them the answers. Alternatively, they could perform a matching activity on this, either in pairs or individually. I would also ask them to predict how they think the ox-bow lakes were formed, before giving them the explanation. Curriculum Linkage: Geography (Rivers), Science (Forces). Video of the River Liffey

River Heads
The children will look at the River Heads on the Customs House in Dublin, designed by James Gandon. Teaching Ideas/ Suggested Activities: The children will look at the features of some of the river heads, such as the ropes, fish, etc. They will then design their own river head for the local river. Curriculum Linkage: Geography (Rivers), Art (The children will create their own river heads), History (The children will look at the development of the Customs House). |

Just Around the River Bend
The children will watch the video from Disney's Pocahontas as an introduction to the lesson on rivers. Teaching Ideas/Suggested Activities: I will play this as an introductory activity. They will also learn the lyrics to the song for English (An abridged version). Curriculum Linkage: Geography (Rivers), Music (Song Singing). |
